The Recruiter
by Michel Grimaud

One day‚ they lost their jobs‚ so the city begins its rejection procedure. There are suddenly thousands of unemployed on the streets or piled into special towns. In order to survive‚ they search for little jobs whilst hiding. The recruiters are on the prowl to enrol them by force in the work forces in space. There is work there‚ yes‚ but rarely does anyone return. Piero was trapped by a recruiter: for a meal and a few glasses of wine‚ he signed up. Regaining his spirits‚ he is condemned to flee. On his journey he meets up with Laure‚ young‚ beautiful and blind‚ and Vivien‚ a young man who sometimes has a weird behaviour… Who are they? Do friendship and solidarity have a meaning when a tip–off can ensure your survival? Who can you turn to‚ when the recruiters use any ruse to catch you‚ when you can’t know a person’s real personality when you meet?
First published with the title "Le Temps des Gueux"‚ Travelling sur le futur‚ 1980. Age: 15 and up
