Spa‚ 1944. A beautiful love story takes place between Robert de Montbreuse‚ an aristocrat officer‚ and Misia‚ a young and beautiful Polish girl working at a farm. But nothing is simple for these two youngsters living during the war. Liège‚ 1956‚ Jean and Pitou are 11 years old. Jean de Montbreuse has a secret: his father‚ the "smiling lieutenant"‚ was killed by the SS in 1945 for being in the resistance‚ and his mother died while giving birth to him. His uncle and aunt are raising him as their own child‚ in a big sad house. One day‚ during the holidays‚ the two kids decide to go and find Jean’s roots in the forest of Montbreuse‚ near Spa.
